The Blair Witch Project
Blair Witch
The Blair Witch Project is a found footage horror film that was filmed on a low budget in 1999 and has since become a cult favourite. The film itself is the footage shot by three film students that mysteriously disappeared but all of their filming equipment was discovered a year later intact.
Multiple budget figures have circulated which are all speculations of the actual amount the film cost. These speculations range from $20,000 to $750,000.
The Blair Witch Project certainly didn't invent the concept of found footage but it brought the filming technique into the horror genre and making it more mainstream. The film made such a big impact on the horror genre that multiple copycat films have been made but none of made such an impact as The Blair Witch Project.
The film was successful for multiple reasons, one of which was the feeling of uncertainty that it gave people. People were unsure if they were real people, had they really disappeared and whether it was real or not. At this time it was difficult for people to check the authenticity of a story whereas nowadays it is very simple and easy. It would also be relatively difficult to replicate the campaign used to market the film. Many have tried and the majority have failed.
